Mali. AEJ to Europe: More protection for journalist

The Association of European Journalists, extending its condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of French journalists Ghisliane Dupont and Claude Verlon who were kidnapped and killed in Northern Mali, urges the member states of the Council of Europe to use the opportunity of the forthcoming Conference of Ministers responsible for Media Affairs in Belgrade on November 7th and 8th to demonstrate their active commitment to enforce physical and legal protection for journalists who risk their lives to keep the world informed.

The AEJ also condemns these killings, which demonstrate, yet again, the dangers associated with reporting from conflict zones and underline the need for the Council of Europe and other pan-European institutions, concerned with upholding safeguards for human rights, to intensify their efforts to ensure physical and legal protection for journalists who risk their lives to keep the world informed.

To that end the AEJ urges the member states of the Council of Europe to use the opportunity of the forthcoming Conference of Ministers responsible for Media Affairs in Belgrade on November 7th and 8th to demonstrate that active commitment.
