What happened in Italy: threatened journalists and obscured news
Ossigeno per L’Informazione has picked up reports and reported cases of intimidation and threats against journalists also during this past week. Besides the unpleasant episodes, however, some Courts have sentenced acquittals and requested the dismissal of charges against journalists accused of defamation. Following, the events of greatest importance.
Piera Pipitone, editor of the web TV TeleIBS and of the fortnightly review L’Opinione di Mazara del Vallo, in the province of Trapani, found her car on the morning of September 18th with the tires slashed and the roof window broken. The journalist had written a few articles on the failure of a treatment plant.
DEFAMATION – The editor of the online daily newspaper Giornale del Cilento, Maurizio Troccoli, and the judiciary reporter, Luigi Martino, received a notice of conclusion of the investigation that preludes a trial for defamation. They were sued for using the words “gang” and “extortionists” by some people arrested as part of a judicial investigation on a criminal association dedicated to usury.
The MP Ms Jole Santelli has sued the reporter of the TV show Le Iene Ms Sabrina Nobile, who, during an interview aired on September, 24th, asked her what ISIS (the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria) was. Ms Santelli claims damages to her image and personal reputation.
FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION? – In Rome, two bus drivers of the TPL company (local public transport) have been suspended from duty for having spoken of the failure of some vehicles during an interview with the inquiring TV show Presadiretta of RAI 3 (episode dated September, 21st).
The public prosecutor Margherita Brunello has asked for the filing of the lawsuit brought by the mayor of Verona, Flavio Tosi, against the journalist of the TV show Report Sigfrido Ranucci, for an episode in April that delved into the relationship between the ‘Ndrangheta in Calabria and part of the city administration.
ACQUITTALS – The journalists of La Nuova Ferrara will not have to compensate the former prosecutor of the city Mariaemanuela Guerra, who had brought a civil lawsuit accusing the newspaper of a smear campaign with articles published between 2007 and 2010 on the “Aldrovandi case “, the 18 year-old who died in 2005 in a public park during a police raid. The judge of the court of Ancona, Maria Teresa Danieli, has rejected the claim of “at least €1.5 million” because “free of foundations.”
The former editor of La Gazzetta del Molise, Vincenzo Cimino, was acquitted by the Court of Campobasso from a lawsuit dating back to 2007. The journalist applied a correction on the day following the erroneous publication by a co-worker who reported the indictment of the Mayor Lupara. The Mayor however sued for libel nonetheless. Giancarlo and Fabio De Palo, brothers of Graziella, the journalist mysteriously disappeared in Lebanon in 1980 with her colleague Italo Toni, decided to formally present to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers an instance of access to documents – so far covered by state secrecy – collected at the time by the Italian secret services and other public institutions.
