What happened in Italy: threatened journalists and obscured news

TWO AGGRESSIONS – one of which with death threats – stand out among the intimidation of media workers occurred in Italy last week. The monitoring method developed by the Observatory, meanwhile, continues to gather support around Europe. And the book that inspired the creation of the Observatory is back in bookstores.

AGGRESSIONS – Ines Conradi, television worker for the broadcaster Telereggio, was beaten, wounded with a knife and threatened with death while filming the scene of an accident. It happened on 19 October in TincanaCarpineti, in the province of Reggio Emilia. To attack her: two family members of the woman protagonist of the road accident.

The correspondent of the satirical TV show “Striscia la Notizia” GimmyGhione and two cameramen were assaulted and robbed while filming in via Giolitti, near the Termini train station in Rome. The cell phone and the camera were damaged, while the crew’s car keys were stolen. Police arrested three people on October 23, which will have to face charges of personal violence, damage and serious injuries.

COMPLAINT – On September 30, during the city council, the mayor of Scicli (in the province of Ragusa), Mr Franco Susino, granting the request by some councillors, announced a lawsuit against the newspaper La Repubblica and the journalist AttilioBolzoni. The reason is an article in which Bolzoni explained that the City could be commissioned for mafia infiltration and that the mayor is under investigation for collusion.

THREAT UPDATE – Messrs Francesco Loizzo and PietroCalvano will have to answer before the court of Paola (in the province of Cosenza) of charges of attempted violence and threat (Loizzo) and beatings (Calvano, 31 years old) against the journalist of the newspaper Quotidianodella Calabria Mr Paolo Orofino, attacked on March 14th of this year.

OSSIGENO METHOD – After having been the subject of debate during the South East Europe Media Forum (SEEMF) which was held from the 16th to the 18th of October in Skopje, the “Ossigeno Method” was presented at the congress of the Association des JournalistesEuropéens that took place in Austria, in Neusiedl-am-See, in the Burgenland, from the 16th to the 19th of October. Luigi Cobisi, treasurer of the Italian section of the AEJ, invited the national sections of the AEJ to consider adopting it in order to identify those threats against journalists that traditional methods of observation are not able to classify and publish.

ACQUITTALS – The Supreme Court has acquitted of defamation the newspaper La Repubblica, which had published excerpts of a telephone conversation between a private and a suspect: the acts were no longer secret and were contained in a custody order.

MEMORY – In the occasion of the 42nd anniversary of the assassination of the journalist Giovanni Spampinato, the correspondent of the newspaper L’Ora killed in Ragusa in 1972 being shot to death, an updated version of the book that reconstructs his life and the events that led to his death is back in bookstores. The volume, “C’eranobeicani ma moltoseri. Storia di miofratello Giovanni, uccisoperchéscrivevatroppo” (There were beautiful dogs but they were very serious. Story of my brother Giovanni, killed because he wrote too much) has been written by the Editor of Ossigeno per l’Informazione, Alberto Spampinato, brother of the slain journalist.

Striscia La Notizia crew attacked in Rome, three arrests and a complaint
GimmyGhione and two cameramen were beaten and robbed by a group close to the Termini train station. Police arrested three people
They attacked and robbed a crew from the satirical TV show Striscia La Notizia during a service in via Giolitti, near the Termini train station in Rome. By the same Thursday, October 23rd, three people, two Romans and a Neapolitan between 31 and 47 years of age, were arrested by the police and will face charges of personal violence, damages and serious injuries. The City Council unanimously approved a document to lodge a complaint against the journalist of La Repubblica and all those who have defamed the city
The mayor of Scicli (in the province of Ragusa), Mr Franco Susino, announced a lawsuit against the newspaper La Repubblica and the journalist AttilioBolzoni. Mr Susino made the announcement on September 30th in the city council, after that some councillors had asked him to file a lawsuit for an article in which Bolzoni explained that Scicli could be commissioned for mafia infiltration and that the mayor is under investigation for collusion by the prosecutor in Catania.
