What is going on in Italy – Safety Net Ossigeno –12th-18th January 2015
The 46th of 48 weekly reports created with the support of the European Union and disseminated in eleven countries to promote a common awareness
In Italy the protests continue from the world of information against the new draft law on defamation being considered by the House, which proposes replacing the prison with high fines not explicitly dependent on income and assets of the condemned. The problem, long a battle for Ossigeno, is serious and always present: last week the observatory spoke of two large claims, which are likely to cripple the activities of the reporters involved.
In Vicenza the entrepreneur Renzo Rosso, founder of the clothing brand Diesel, asked a million euro in damages to the journalist Alessandro Ambrosini for two articles published in 2014 on the news website of Notte Criminale: in the first it said that Rosso knew for a long time a former affiliate of the Masonic lodge P2; in another, published in September, it gives an account of an alleged attempted extortion by the entrepreneur.
In Porto Recanati the building company Coneroblu has claimed a compensation for 465 thousand euro to Alessandro Trevisani, freelance journalist and contributor to the newspaper online CroncheMaceratesi, for an article and other comments that would have damaged the reputation of the Administrator of the company, Lydia Karmalyuk, and the plans to build a five-star resort on the Burchio Hill.
THREATS – In Genoa anonymous leaflets were posted with a photograph of the reporter Riccardo Porcù, collaborator of the daily IlSecoloXIX: it happened on January 13th in front of the entrance to the Matitone palace in Genoa. The journalist had written of the inefficiency of civil servants.
In Milan on January 16 journalists of the offices of the weekly Tempi, which recently defended the idea of the “traditional family”, found dung on the front door and the inscription on the outside wall of the building: “Tempi:homophobic and sexist shits!”.
AGGRESSION – The journalist Reno Giannantonio was attacked at the end of the football match Benevento-Cosenza on December 23. A hooligan of the home team insulted him because he had criticized the sports club.
CHARLIE HEBDO – Even in Italy the attention is still on the attack on the French magazine and on the issue of freedom of information: Roberto Saviano has asked the European Parliament to organize, a month after the massacre, a European Council dedicated to all those who pay and have paid with their own skin the price of a free expression. Also the journalist Sergio Zavoli on Ossigeno’s website has spoken on the same subject by announcing that the priority must remain information.
PROCESS – The first hearing against the journalists, authors of the book Metastasi, Gianluigi Nuzzi and Claudio Antonelli, was held on 12 January. The lawsuit was filed by Italo Bruseghini, former leader of the Democratic Party in the provincial council of Lecco and former mayor of Olginate (Lecco province).
RETRACTED LAWSUIT – The Senator Francesco Nitto Palma, President of the Senate Judiciary Committee and former Minister of Justice, has decided to withdraw, in return for a payment of 8 thousand euro, the libel suit against Andrea Signorelli, external collaborator of Blogo.it.
EXONERATIONS AND ARCHIVIATION – Giovanni Luigi Piccinin, collaborator of the newspaper Il Gazzettino, who was sued for aggravated defamation in 2008 by the then mayor of Azzano Decimo (Pordenone province) Enzo Bortolotti, was acquitted by the Court of Pordenone, which filed the lawsuit against him because he had reported a real news.
The judge for the preliminary investigation of the Court of Catania Fabio Di Giacomo Barbagallo has filed the lawsuit of the mayor Enzo Bianco against a user of Wikipedia who had touched up the biography of the first citizen.
Also in Padua the lawsuit that the colonel of the Guardia di Finanza Bruno Biagi had filed against the journalist Sigfrido Ranucci of Report, author of an investigation broadcast on April 7, 2014 on some personal relationships entertained by the mayor of Verona Flavio Tosi, was sent to the archives.
