The mayor of Lecce, Paolo Perrone wants to file a claim for damages to five newspapers that in 2011, in his opinion, would have injured the honor and dignity of the City Council. The authors of the articles hypothesized that members of the city’s political body had used cocaine. The unexpected decision of the mayor has aroused astonishment and protests among journalists.
The inspiration for the articles was given by the judicial operation “Augusta”. 49 people were arrested, including members of the Sacra Corona Unita, accused of racketeering and drug dealing. Investigators hypothesized that they had sold cocaine to some politicians and professionals of Lecce. The investigative hypotheses were reported by national and local press.
