Human Rights Commissioner wishes for an “Ossigeno” in every country
Nils Muiznieks said so in Strasbourg in receving the director Spampinato, who thanked him for the happy definition, “disguised censorship”, which he coined
“In every European country there should be an independent observatory just like yours”, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, Nils Muiznieks, said while receiving in Strasbourg the Director of Ossigeno per l’Informazione, Alberto Spampinato.
The Commissioner congratulated him for the work done in order to assist Italian journalists victims of threats and abuse and to obtain from the Italian authorities greater protections of press freedom.
Spampinato explained that Ossigeno has found a very effective instrument in the definition of “disguised censorship” coined by Muiznieks to describe the effect of intimidation and threats in free and democratic countries.
Ossigeno has embraced this definition and is spreading it across Europe. Spampinato informed the Commissioner of the positive outcome of the meetings that took place in Madrid and Berlin and of the interest raied from the hypothesis of experimenting in other European countries the “Disguised Censorship Detector”, created by Ossigeno which in Italy has allowed to disclose the names of 2,800 journalists threatened, indicating for each one the nature and causes of intimidation.
