Ossigeno: Threats to journalists blindfold readers
Whoever threatens a journalist to prevent the publication of news causes damage to all citizens who as a consequence are denied that information. Whoever threatens a journalist blindfolds his/her readers and prevents them from exercising a fundamental right. It is strange that these actions are not legally prosecuted. Fundamental rights deserve explicit legal protection. This was affirmed in Madrid at the Complutense University by the director of Ossigeno, Alberto Spampinato during the conference “Italy and Spain: Freedom and Censorship – the great silence”. Spampinato reminded his audience that in Italy Ossigeno’s proposal to create the offence of “obstructing information” was shared by the Italian Parliament’s Anti-Mafia Commission.
