Video. Ossigeno at Officina Stampa webtv

Threats, protection, assistance, visibility, self-censorship. The themes of the interview with the director of the Observatory, Alberto Spampinato

“The threats against journalists who do their job properly are numerous, more than you can imagine. We of Ossigeno speak of this problem which, according to common perception, does not even exist. But it is actually there, and it is a serious damage to all citizens, to each one of us. Ossigeno also helps those threatened journalists who alone can not defend themselves”, said Alberto Spampinato, director of Ossigeno, as he was interviewed by Chiara Rai on Thursday, April 13, 2017 for the web tv Officina Stampa. You can watch it at this link.

Faced with threats and intimidation, he stressed, journalists must find the strength to resist and denounce the phenomenon to law enforcement agencies. Publishers, editors, and institutions could do a lot more to protect and assist those who receive threats, as Ossigeno suggested, for example by strengthening journalists’ solidarity by coding a practice on the visibility of the threatened, implying that self-censorship is not a solution, but rather a turning back on journalism.

During the event, it was announced that on April 20 in Anguillara Sabazia (a town in the province of Rome), where Ossigeno will deliver to the city the Memory Panel on journalists killed in Italy and abroad by the organized crime while doing their job. On the meaning of the ceremony, watch the interview with Alberto Spampinato and the Councilor for Tourism and Culture of Anguillara Sabazia (Rome), Viviana Normando.
