Sicily. Verbal threats to a journalist who writes of a drugs investigation

Giuseppe Spallino was stopped in the street in Castelbuono and attacked by a couple involved in the investigation

On 29 July in Castelbuono (in the province of Palermo), a town of 8,000 people in which he lives, the journalist Giuseppe Spallino was threatened by two fellow citizens who told him not to write other articles about the criminal cases in which they are involved. In previous days, Spallino had reported exclusively with three news articles published by the Giornale di Sicilia, the development of a judicial inquiry into a narcotics distribution where nine people were suspected, including the two aggressors, mentioned in the articles by their initials.

The two, a man and a woman, were traveling on a moped when they saw the journalist on the street. They approached him and threatened him, telling him not to write anything about their involvement in the investigation. Spallino ran away and went to the nearby Carabinieri barracks. The couple pursued him there and continued to threaten him in the presence of the Carabinieri, the mayor of Castelbuono, and the chief editor of a local newspaper. “The solidarity of the people, of colleagues, and men of the institutions – Spallino told Ossigeno – push me to continue doing my job as a journalist.”
