End Impunity: Ossigeno Conferences the 23rd and 30th October in Rome

To celebrate the UN’s International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. Training credits for journalists

The United Nations International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists which occurs on the 2nd November will be celebrated in Rome by Ossigeno per l’Informazione with two initiatives.

The main event will take place on Monday 23rd October from 15:00 to 19:00 with a conference entitled “Journalists attacked, the culpable unpunished. What is happening in Italy. UN concern”, which will take place in Sala Koch of the Senate of the Italian Republic, Palazzo Madama, Piazza Madama, Rome. The President of the Senate, Pietro Grasso will open the  proceedings.

The situations in Rome and Lazio will be examined in depth the following Monday 30th October from 09:00 to 13:00 at the FNSI, Corso Vittorio Emanuele 349 in another conference entitled, “Alarm in Rome. Presentation and analysis of the Ossigeno Dossier on the threats and attacks on journalists who work in Lazio and in Rome.”

Both conferences are recognised as continuing professional enrichment for journalists. Six credits are available of which two related to ethics for each conference for journalists enrolled on the programme Sigef of the Ordine dei Giornalisti, Enti Terzi (link).

The conference of the 23rd October at the Senate is promoted by Ossigeno together with the Associazione Stampa Romana (Roman Press Association) and the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) with the support of the European Commission and under the patronage of the Senate of the Italian Republic, the House of Deputies, the Presidency of the Council, UNESCO, AgCom,  Ordine dei Giornalisti, FNSI, FIEG, the Association of European Journalists and Articolo 21.

The President of the Senate, Pietro Grasso will open the proceedings.

The speakers will include the secretary of the Rome Press Association, Lazzaro Pappagallo, the president and the secretary of Ossigeno, Alberto Spampinato and Giuseppe F. Mennella, the coordinator of the Legal Aid Office of Ossigeno, avv. Andrea Di Pietro,  representatives from AGCOM, the Ordine dei Giornalisti, from FNSI and from FIEG.

The themes:  these will deal with the attacks which are taking place throughout the world against journalists, against press freedom and freedom of expression, and against the right of citizens both to be informed and to express opinions. The causes whereby the aggressors go unpunished in almost all the cases will be analysed and proposals to change this situation will be illustrated.

In addition to data from UNESCO on the international situation, data compiled by Ossigeno per l’Informazione will be analysed both as regarding physical attacks and vexatious litigation exploited in an instrumental way to obstruct freedom of expression, of information and of scientific research. Proposals will be examined to limit the abuses and the obstacles to the constitutional right to inform and to be informed.

The conference of the 30th October at the FNSI will take place in the Sala Tobagi. The participants will include: Lazzaro Pappagallo, secretary of the ASR; Alberto Spampinato, president of Ossigeno; Giuseppe F. Mennella, secretary of Onlus; representatives of the national and regional Ordine dei Giornalisti and of the Federazione della Stampa and witnesses of the events which form the focus of  the conference.
